Rare Animals

Thursday, May 19, 2011

This world is full of fascinating creatures that walk the land, swim the seas and soar to the skies. These creatures are divided by kingdoms and all in all there are four; the protista, fungi, plantae and last but definitely not the least, the kingdom animalia. With over 2 million species called animals, kingdom animalia is the largest compared to the three kingdoms. Bears, spiders, sharks are just one of the many species belonging to this certain category. Sadly, many of these animals are close to the brink of extinction due to deforestation, oil spills and many things that the destructive man has invented for wealth and power.

Sadly, many of these animals are close to the brink of extinction due to deforestation, oil spills and many things that the destructive man will do for wealth and power. Because of this, many of them have become more vulnerable, threatened and endangered. Fortunately, there are many organizations that are doing their best to save these rare animals. Animals like the blue whale, Philippine eagle, tiger, and orangutan are considered to be rare and are facing a very high risk of endangerment in the near future. Unfortunately, there are many animals that have been extinct beyond reasonable doubt and those are the Javan Tiger, Thylacine, Dodo, Passenger Pigeon, Caribbean Monk Seal, Dimetrodon, Aurochs and Dusky Seaside Sparrow and many people are being afraid that the Alagoas Curassow, Mountain Gorilla, Arakan Forest Turtle, Darwin’s Fox, Javan Rhino, Brazillian Merganser, Gharial and Vaquita which are considered to be facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild to share the same fate as them.

Currently, 1,556 known species in the world are starting to be considered as rare animals or close to extinction day by day. In order for us to conserve the biodiversity of the planet, we must first take into consideration the reasons why animals are starting t be endangered. Habitat loss is the most widespread cause of species endangerment in the U.S. When an animal’s ecosystem is not maintained, they lose their home and are either forced to adapt to new surroundings or perish. Pollution is another factor. Also, over-exploitation, disease and climate changes contribute to the endangerment of the animals. We, humans also have an impact on the species and their environment. As human use of resources, energy and space intensified over the past few years, the diversity of life have been slowly diminishing.

Animals have done many good things for us like serving as a tourist attraction, contributing to the medical field and as identifiers to the hazards of human health. There are many things why we should support organizations that are focusing on the biodiversity of the planet earth and mentioned above are just one of those. That is why rare animals should be saved before they go extinct in the wild. Remember, that there is a food pyramid in the animal kingdom and that you should not take any element from it for it will have a domino effect.

Rare breed

A rare breed is defined as a breed of livestock or poultry that is not common in modern agriculture, though it may have been in the past. Various national and international organizations, such as the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy or the Rare Breeds Survival Trust of the United Kingdom, each define the exact parameters of what defines a rare breed. Many breeds that qualify as rare by these standards may only have a few thousand or even just a few hundred breeding individuals.

These organizations pursue conservation of heritage livestock and poultry for their unique traits, which can contribute to genetic diversity among animals important to human food supplies and economies, as well as general biodiversity and improvements in animal husbandry. The parallel of rare animal breeds are heirloom plants, which are rare cultivars.

Vampire Squid

FEATURES:
The vampire squid, (Vampyroteuthis infernali) which depicts something that swam out of a late-night science fiction. But in spite of its bizarre name, this squid is a small creature, which grows up to 6 inches length. It is one of the oldest species. It is an exclusive member which shares similarities with both squid and octopuses.

They have large fins at the top of its body that resemble ears. They serve as primary means of thrust as it flies through the water with the help of flapping their fins. They have very gelatinous form, resembling a jellyfish. It will swim faster with a speed of reaching over two body lengths in a second. The largest eyes are relative to its body size of any animal. Though it is comparatively small, they appear red or blue in color.

ARMS:
They have eight arms which are connected with a webbing of skin, which gives an appearance of an octopus than a squid. When threatened, it can draw its arms up by itself and form a suspicious web which covers the whole body. Each of the eight arms is lined with a single row of suction cups and rows of soft, fleshy spines known as cirri. The color of the squid ranges from jet black to pale red. Their body is covered with light-producing organs called photophores.

DIET:
The vampire squid is a carnivorous animal. Its diet consists of prawns, copepods, cnidarians, and other small invertebrates. The beaks of it is found in the stomachs of seals, whales, and fishes, The interesting fact is that they can roam around without eating for a longer period of time.

EGGS:
Their eggs will be of small and opaque, with a size of about eight millimeters. They reproduce slowly by laying small number of eggs.

RARE PERSIAN ONAGERS BORN AT THE WILDS

Four years of work by a team of scientists, veterinarians, animal care specialists and interns from the Wilds and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) have culminated in the birth of two rare Persian onagers (pronounced on-uh-ger). The foals, born at the Wilds on June 28, 2010 and July 9, 2010, are the first wild equids of any species to be born using artificial insemination. One foal was produced using semen that had previously been frozen, another scientific "first."

Scientists spent two years at the Wilds learning about the normal reproductive biology of onagers that until now had largely gone unstudied. The project led by Mandi Vick, a post-doctoral fellow at the Wilds and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Virginia, included developing non-invasive hormone monitoring to follow the normal reproductive cycles and semen cryopreservation (freezing) and storage--research that was essential to the successful breeding of the onagers.

"It is amazing when you take a step back and realize all of the hard work, enthusiasm and expertise that go into understanding the uniqueness of how each species reproduces and how scientific technologies can be applied to ensure sustainable populations," said Vick, now Associate Curator of Research at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. "This work demonstrates the power of science for improving our ability to manage and conserve not only Persian onagers, but also other species of endangered equids."

By the third year of the study, the team had the tools and information needed to attempt the artificial inseminations. In July and August 2009, three females were inseminated with sperm collected from different males all living at the Wilds where the procedures were performed utilizing specialized handling facilities. The births occurred after gestation periods of 347 and 325 days.

The endangered Persian onager (Equus hemionus onager) is an Asiatic wild ass and a member of the Equidae (horse) family. There are believed to be approximately 600-700 onagers remaining in two protected areas in Iran where the population is severely threatened by loss of desert habitat, poaching and competition with domestic livestock.

There are fewer than 30 onagers maintained in zoological institutions in all of North America and less than 100 in institutions worldwide. The current population is not self-sustaining and there is an urgent need to establish a healthy population of onagers as a hedge against extinction, and eventually, perhaps a resource for future reintroduction.

This work is part of the Wilds' and SCBI's collaboration with the Conservation Centers for Species Survival (C2S2), a group of large conservation facilities in North America dedicated to cooperative breeding and research for the advancement of species conservation. Established in 2005, C2S2 applies its unique resources for the survival of species with special needs; especially those requiring large living areas, natural group sizes, minimal public disturbance and scientific research. The Wilds and SCBI are founding members of C2S2, along with Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, White Oak Conservation Center, and San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park,

With the birth of the two new foals there are currently 17 Persian onagers at the Wilds. The first onagers came to the Wilds in 1997 and 14 other foals have been born there. Onagers, as well as more than 25 other rare and endangered species from Africa, Asia and North America, can be seen from Safari Transport and Open-Air Safari tours offered daily June-August and on weekends in May, September and October at the Wilds.
