Penguins to dinosaurs, local talent bites into $65m

Wednesday, February 2, 2011

THE drought in attracting international film work to Sydney looks to be over, with a $65 million movie based on the TV series Walking With Dinosaurs to be shot in NSW over two years.

The Sydney animation company Animal Logic, best known for Happy Feet and Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole, will create digital creatures in outdoor settings in NSW and Alaska for Walking With Dinosaurs 3D, an ''immersive'' 3D experience set 70 million years ago. The Premier, Kristina Keneally, announced the movie as part of $80 million of film work that had been attracted to the state, creating 800 jobs.

NSW visual effects companies are also working this year on converting the final Harry Potter movie to 3D and scenes in Hollywood's Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger and the Alien prequel, Prometheus.

Keneally said the government was negotiating for other movies, including Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby.
