Description

Tarbosaurus bataar is the closest relative to the famous Tyrannosaurus rex. They are so similar that it is often considered and other species of Tyrannosaurus, Tyrannosaurus bataar. Tarbosaurus bataar is restricted to Asia and generally seems a bit smaller than T. rex, however the largest specimens of Tarbosaurus rival T. rex with a length of 12 meters. The differences between the two are mostly cranial characters. It is without any doubt one of the largest carnivorous dinosaurs. Tarbosaurus bataar is found in Upper Cretaceous layers (Campanian-Maastrichtian, 84-65 Ma) of Mongolia and China. Most of the specimens come from the Nemegt Formation at Omnogov, but it is also known from the White Beds of Khermeen Tsav, Nemegtskaya Svita and Bayankhongor, all in Mongolia. In China it is known from the Subashi and the Naxiong Formations, as well as from Xinjiang.

History

The skull and the rest of the Tarbosaurus bataar holotype was collected in 1955 by the Palaeontological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the former Soviet Union. The species was erected by the the russian palaeontologist Maleev in 1955. Since then a large number of specimens have been collected and even though many new specimens of Tyrannosaurus rex have been collected in recent years, the number of Tarbosaurus bataar remains is probably still higher.

Osteology

This is a cast of the original holotype skull of the species Tarbosaurus bataar. The very complete holotype has been completed with casts of original Tyrannosaurus bones to make this replica truly sensational. Whether in mounted or dismounted conditions, the replica of this Tarbosaurus skull is an excellent display of theropod and especially tyrannosaur cranial structure and of an exceptional quality.
